There are two main sets of ingredients you need to make compost in a compost pile or compost heap, plus a little air and some water.
- The "greens", which are nitrogen producers and contain all the water you should need to add to your compost
- The "browns", which are carbon producers and help absorb excess liquid.
Check out the detailed list of green and brown goodies you can put into your compost pile or heap, you'll be suprised just what can go in. You will also find a list of other biodegradable items that can be successfully hot composted and, more importantly, a list of things you should not add. I mean it, you just don’t want to go there.
When considering how to make compost using the hot composting method you will need a minimum of 1 cubic meter of these ingredients in the same place at the same time. You may need to store them before hand in order to achieve this. Storing is not a problem with the browns, which are mostly carbon, however volumes of greens may start to ferment and smell if stored for any length of time so plan in advance.Think about when you are next due to do a blitz in the garden rather than planning to just use all your kitchen waste
