Your homemade compost is ready to use when the ingredients you have used are no longer identifiable. Good compost should be;
- A rich brown colour
- A crumbly texture
- Slightly damp
- Smell earthy and not unpleasant
There may still be some identifiable woody components and I am sure there will be a few things on the avoid list that will have slipped in. Sifting and sorting will bring these unwanted items to the surface. You can remove and reprocess the compostable stuff and dispose of the non compostable stuff.
