Once you have created this wonderful, free, homemade compost I hear you ask what you are supposed to use it for. You can use it for anything that you would use the shop bought varieties for, although yours will be more nutritious, will be peat free and will have a lower carbon footprint than anything you can buy.
If sieving, the grade of sieve you use will determine how fine the particles in your compost are and what you can use them for.
- A fine grade of compost can be used with seedlings.
- A medium grade of compost is perfect for potting on, making up pots, tubs and hanging baskets.
- A large grade of compost is perfect for mulching and digging in with plants. The basic, unsieved material you have produced is equivalent to manufactured, multipurpose, general use compost and has done my plants no harm from seedling to mulch.
You can add sand, grit, vermiculite or fertiliser to your compost to suit your use. Most of mine goes around my herbaceous plants, is dug into the vegetable patch or is used in our greenhouse.
When you have done, remember to sit back and enjoy the outputs of your labour, then start composting it all over again!
