Cat and dog faeces are high on the "just don't go there" composting list. This is because our lovely pets have some nasty bacteria in their intestines that are carried out in the faeces. the bacteria are not killed by the composting process. Whilst the faeces themselves will decompose the bacteria will remain in the compost to be spread around your garden when you use it. These bacteria can cause blindness and miscarriage amongst other things.
If you would like to compost your cat or dog faeces or dispose of them without contributing to landfill there are a number of things you can try, these include;
- The recommended approach for composting is to use a Green Cone composter. This is a permanently sited compost bin which is slightly sunk into the ground. The compost produced is not removed but left to be drawn down into the soil by the worms. There are some guidelines for the use of a green cone and these should be read and understood before you make a purchase, soil type is one of the things to be wary of.
- If you have access to a dense hedge that children do not play in you could bag the waste up in a compostable bag, corn starch bags decompose in approx 40 days, and leave the waste to decompose naturally under the hedge.
- You could flush it, it is not much different from the stuff you produce.
- We don't have dags or cats however we do have them visit, cats usually use someone else garden don't they! The calling card they leave is buried and disappears eventually. You could try digging a hole and putting the waste in the bottom of it.
I hope these suggestions have helped. If you have any more please let me know.
